YOURSMILEMATTERS!TBy: Dr. Steven SulfaroSEALANTSDental sealants are preventative and pro-tective composite resins that are applied toposterior teeth. Sealants are usually placedon children's teeth but I have placed themon adult teeth as well. Some teeth developin such a way that they have very deep andprominent pits and fissures on the occlusal(biting) surface. These are good candidates for sealants. These deep pits andfissures can trap plaque and food debrisand are sometimes so deep that they'revirtually impossible to keep clean. Thisaccumulated plaque and debris can leadto decay of the teeth in these areas. Oncedecayed, the teeth need to be filled. As apreventive measure, dental sealants areplaced. The sealant material is very fluidnd readily flows into these deep pit andfissure areas. This literally seals out plaqueand food debris preventing it's accumulation in the pit and fissures and subsequentdecay formation. The process is very easyfor the child. There's no drilling or anesthesia required. The surface of the tooth isprepared for bonding and then the sealantmaterial "painted on" then hardened withuse a curing light. Once in place, a dentalsealant should last for years. The sealantwill protect against decay formation asthe child passes through the cavity proneyears and into adulthoodI welcome your questions and comments.Feel free to e-mail me drsulfaro@comcast.netSULffROFAMLY DENTISTRYCREATING BEAUTIFUL SMILES FOR OVER 20 YEARS607 N.
